Virtual Panel discussion

The AAS Continued Education/Science Committee had its first project done on Saturday, January 26th, 2008. It was a Virtual Panel Discussion on Pursuing Careers in Healthcare and it was done over a teleconference that day from 1pm to 3pm. It consisted of a discussion of between moderators and several professionals.

The event received positive reaction from those who participated and those who were able to listen in. It is in general agreement that the discussion was very helpful in many ways. It was nice to see the perspectives of students in several diverse fields related to science and healthcare.

One moderator commented how hearing first hand perspectives not only highlighted the enjoyment and satisfaction that comes along with being in graduate school and working alongside motivated peers towards a personal goal but also the difficulties that come. It was especially helpful to hear what realistically can and cannot be accomplished.
A moderator recalled how the professionals were very open and interactive, and did not shy away from any of the questions. Their personal recollections and advice helped the listeners empathize with what the professionals are going through right now and what they went through in the past. Needless to say, each professional had something unique to say and this diversity of experiences helped the students gain rich insights into many different fields.

Among many things that were learned that day, it was clear that it is important to learn to stay organized. One would have to learn to manage his time and he may have to put his social life on hold for a while. “But that's the way it works,” a moderator commented, “but more importantly, the effort is worth it in the end.”

The status of the recording of the discussion is unknown at the time but the Education/Science Committee hopes to put it up somewhere soon for others to benefit.
