1. Dave's Corner

Hello everyone! I trust everything is going well for all of you, especially those who have gone back to school. I would like to share with you on a weekly basis a leadership insight that I have studied in my past and presence. For this week, the highlight is an emphasis on the human side of leadership: Reaching out and viewing yourself as insignificant. Perhaps, a paragraph taken from taken from the Servant As Leader published by Robert Greenleaf in 1970 would illustrate the point:

“The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. He or she is sharply different from the person who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions. For such it will be a later choice to serve – after leadership is established. The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.”

I am particularly intrigued by the last phrase of the quote. Your comments and additional insights are welcome and appreciated.

On a different note, if you are interested in doing a weekly newsletter on any particular week, please let us know your name and date of the week.

Hey, this is Dan,Just wanting to wish a you a early Happy Birthday Ha`! Hope everything's going alright with you at GMU.At Vtech, we don't get labor day off, so I actually have to wake up in 6 hours or so. -_- I've been busy trying to settle in lately and get acquainted with the people and area here. I'm most likely joining the VSA (Vietnamese Student Association) and the CAS (Chinese American Society). Qi mentioned to me about the service fraternity too, so I could get involved in that for the spring semester. There's lots of things, so I'll see. How's everyone else doing?- Dan

Dave, I actually have that book you referenced to. I also found the book very meaningful. It's definitely not a typical book. This one addresses more of the inner humbling side of a leader, one that should be emphasized more often than not. *If anyone wants to borrow this book, please let me know and I will share it w/ you. If you're not in DC/NOVA vicinity, just send me an email with your address and I will gladly ship it to you.

MinhHa, happy birthday from one Virgo to another! Mine is two days after yours. Hope you have one fabulous birthday!

Everyone, thanks for blogging and keeping us posted on how you're doing now that school is back! I hope you are all doing well and have acclimated to the new environment and classes! Enjoy it! ~Irina
